In 2020, close to 100,000 Malaysians lost their jobs between the implementation of the first Movement Control Order (MCO) in March until November, while the unemployment rate in Malaysia hit 5.3% – the highest level in over 30 years!

It hasn’t been an easy time for businesses either. Over 30,000 small-medium enterprises (SMEs) shut up shop between March and September, highlighting just how tough the situation has been for employers and employees alike..

However, amidst every storm is an opportunity. Digital-based businesses recorded a tremendous year of growth and productivity, and it doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon. For example, Zoom was the breakout star of 2020, with revenue hitting over US$2.6 bil in the fiscal year, a whopping 326% increase from the previous year. Streaming giant Netflix also added 36.6 million subscribers to reach a total of over 200 million, while recording revenue of close to US$25bil, up from US$20.1 bil the year prior.

Netflix continued to thrive amidst the chaos of Covid-19.

While these two are examples of businesses that were already digital in nature, the huge increases in revenue are reflective of the positive effect that the pandemic had on businesses that were best equipped to adapt to the new normal.

Businesses that traditionally maintained an office presence also showed the way forward, with 56% of business owners supporting a continuation of work from home post-MCO according to a survey by KPMG Malaysia. This highlights not just an adaptation to the situation we find ourselves in, but also a change in mindset which acknowledges that work productivity and efficiency is possible beyond the confines of a centralised office space.

Working in a centralised space may be a thing of the past.

However, 64% of respondents reported “facing difficulties” which needed addressing, highlighting once again the biggest problem of the new working normal – the lack of adequate tools and technology to ensure optimum productivity and efficiency. This is the biggest problem facing many companies today, who may want to implement flexible working practices but often find that their existing devices and technology fail to bridge the gap.
